Joining us to discuss the challenges of reporting in Iran: New York Times Reporter, Nazila Fathi
Nazila Fathi, reporter, worked for the New York Times since 1995 as a stringer out of Tehran, becoming the paper’s Tehran reporter in 2001. She holds a Bachelors of Art in English Translation from Azad University in Tehran and a Masters of Art in Political Science and Women’s Studies from the University of Toronto. Fathi translated a book by Shirin Ebadi, The Documentation of Human Rights in Iran, from Persian into English. The book compares the contradictions in the Iranian laws with International Conventions Iran has signed. She is currently covering Iran for the Times out of Toronto.
Fathi will discuss her coverage of the June, 2009 events in Iran, the obstacles and threats faced. Fathi states that technology played an instrumental role in the coverage once she was banned from reporting and forced to leave the country.
A recent article by Roger Cohen of the New York Times presents a taste of Fathi’s story and that of other Iranians forced into unintended exile: Iranians in Exile.
