Excerpts from Shirin Ebadi’s Speech, Amsterdam, July 25

July 29, 2009

Shirin Ebadi begins her speech by leading the crowd in chants of, Political prisoners must be freed. She then goes on to say, “For thirty years you have heard only of death and this is where it got us. Now is the time to talk about liberty. Long live Liberty.” Ebadi continues by saying that it is time to talk about freedom and democracy.

In this excerpt Ebadi mentions that families of demonstrators killed in the past few weeks are not allowed to hold ceremonies for them.
She tells us that the world has a right to demand and can pay attention to human rights in Iran just as Iran expresses concern over the rights of Palestinians and Iraqis.

Finally she calls on the free people of the world to support and empathize with democratic Iranians.
